A recent study by Herzog et al. (2016) looked into the reliability of MRI scans of the lower back. In this study one patient was taken to 10 different radiology clinics for an MRI of their lower back, all within 3-weeks of each other. The findings were quite remarkable.

From the 10 MRI scans:

  • 49 different ‘findings’ were recorded
  • 16 were unique
  • Not one finding was recorded across all 10

It is important not to just rely on a scan to diagnose and then appropriately manage your low back pain.
